Ghosts, SomTam and the Mighty Mekong River

On the north-side it borders with Laos and on the west-side there is the beautiful Phetchabun Mountain range that in 1970-80's was home to the Headquarter of the Communist Party Thailand (CPT). It consists mainly of the provinces Phetchabun and Loei. This provinces were until the 1970's once of the most remote provinces of Thailand and even off limit for traveling. That is why there is a famous Thai verb "Pai Loei". Literally "Go to Loei" but it means "Get out!".

And if you wake-up very early you can make a trip to the top of Phu Tok and watch the sunrise over Laos and Thailand.
Other main attraction points are the many National Parks like Phu Ruea and Phu Luang with wild elephants. And with all the mountains it is of course also motorbike riding paradise here. My favourite mountain to go up is Phu Thap Boek, the entrance to Phu Hin Rong Khla National Park that was once the HQ of the CPT.

Other attraction points are the Erawan Cave near Nong Bua Lamphu, where you walk up to the cave entrance via a few hundred steps and have a great view over the area. And then of course the road following the Mekong River from Chiang Khan all the way to Nong Khai passes many stunning views over the river and Laos. And also passes many waterfalls and small villages.
